Looking to go to and from NYC on the Acela? Those days might be numbered. It appears the financial obligations of various agencies are not being honored.

From the BBJ:

In a court filing this week, Amtrak signaled that it may not be able to offer rail service to riders in the Bay State unless the MBTA begins meeting its obligations under what is known as the Attleboro Line Agreement.

“MBTA’s refusal to honor its contractual payment obligations has resulted in financial harm to Amtrak, which could potentially jeopardize Amtrak’s ability to provide rail service in Massachusetts,” Amtrak said. “Amtrak depends on timely payments from MBTA for services rendered to ensure its financial stability, fund its operations, and provide service to rail customers traveling to and from Massachusetts. No business partner should have to wait over five years to receive payment on a valid, authorized, and undisputed invoice that is contractually required to be paid within 30 days.”

Boston takes another 1st position in the nation, this is not a positive, however, this is The T!

Our beloved MBTA is dead last with the most breakdowns in the U.S. We are an educated Commonwealth, but we really need to get smart about how we expect our workforce to commute without operational issues beyond their control.

According to a recent article on the Boston Business Journal, “the MBTA recorded 219 major mechanical failures on its commuter rail lines in 2014 — four times the national average. (Notably, the data did not include breakdowns last year during the record-setting snowfall in January and February)…Nationally, 24 commuter railroads had an average 52 major failures in 2014.”

0 Map Indicates Walking Time to the Nearest MBTA Station

The largest concentration of office space north of New York City is the Boston Financial District.  A frequently asked question is, “what the nearest T line and how far is the walk?” Thanks to Aaron Doucett, we now have an answer.

From Boston.com:

[Doucett’s] current creation is a map that MBTA riders can use to visualize the walking distance between their home or office and the nearest MBTA station.

“I wanted to create something that anyone living in Boston or the surrounding cities would find interesting and useful,” Doucett said. “I think this map would also be very helpful for someone looking to move to the area, who is searching for apartments or jobs and wants to estimate their commute.”

The city of Boston is growing its daytime and nighttime population and with that comes infrastructure, who steps in?  The T.  Well yes, it has been discussed for years, but the Greenline is adding six stops in Cambridge, Somerville and Medford.  While some might argue that the Greenline is slow and clunky, yes it’s the old subway in the country, is still performs.  By adding these stops commuters will gain affordable timely access to the city.

Bostinno.Streetwise notes the MBTA’s Green Line Extension project or GLX, calls for “a total of six new Green Line stops added in Cambridge, Somerville and Medford, as well as the relocation of the existing Lechmere Station. One of those planned stops is Union Square – a location which is due to receive its own billion dollar makeover.”
