What types of business use shared workspaces?  Well, the cofounder of b.good is an avid user of Oficio on Newbury Street.

“Jon Olinto, cofounder of the restaurant chain b.good and [his] b.good cofounder Anthony Ackil, his childhood best friend, hold job interviews and meetings in conference rooms at Oficio, which runs two shared office spaces on Newbury Street. About 350 entrepreneurs and companies rent space at Oficio, paying anywhere from $69 a month to use the mailing address to $2,300 a month for a dedicated office for a team of eight workers, with 24/7 access. Oficio provides lunch about once a week, hosts networking events, and schedules guest speakers, such as accountants, to talk about the basics of running a business,” according to a Boston Globe article.

The look and feel of today’s office space is dramatically different than what we saw just 10 years ago.  Collaborative is the new norm and private offices are a thing of the past.  Gone is the bowling alley of offices replaced by open spaces with exposed ceilings.

Drawing a parallel between the modern workspace and online social behavior, the Boston Globe notes, “in a fast-paced high-tech world where community seems to be more valued than privacy, the office partitions have come down in the name of collaboration and quick exchange…Offices are being designed to offer slightly cramped but open spaces to create “collision zones” for employees, where conversations get started and ideas get hatched. Status-based work areas have gotten the pink slip as companies envision cross-departmental, even cross-industry alliances. And why have a meeting around a gigantic table when you and a few co-workers can set up shop in a booth — not so different from one at Denny’s. Sound much different from your office? Just wait.”

“Collaboration” seems to be the most common term in the lexicon of today’s emerging companies. A company dedicated to dynamic, collaborative office space is helping to ensure the trend has an increasing presence in Boston.

From the Daily Free Press:

“WeWork is a collaborative office space, with more than 2,000 members expected to call the Boston offices home by summer. The office space is shared primarily by early-stage startups that would otherwise not have access to many of the amenities available within the space.”
